Based on 380 reviewsHecate is widely recognized for its intimate, atmospheric setting that combines a unique, witchy speakeasy vibe with thoughtful design elements, such as its distinctive menu and immersive entrance. Reviewers frequently praise the bar’s expertly crafted cocktails, highlighting the creative and flavorful drink offerings as a standout feature. Exceptional customer service is another common theme, with staff noted for their attentiveness, professionalism, and accommodating approach, especially regarding special requests or allergies. While the first-come, first-served policy requires some patience, patrons generally agree that the overall experience—from ambiance to drink quality—is well worth the wait, making Hecate a favored destination for those seeking a stylish and engaging night out in Boston.
This is SUCH a fun and witchy speakeasy. Easily one of my top faves. The bartenders were thoughtful with our taste and the menu is so creative! Everything we tried was absolutely delicious including the food. Oh and the menu design is just so absolutely beautiful.
If you're looking for an intimate setting to enjoy some tasty drinks and conversation, Hecate is perfect for that. From the "sketchy" alleyway entrance, to the underground vibe, you're reminded of Hecate's domain being the goddess of boundaries, underworld and witchcraft. Music plays at a level loud enough to be heard but not enough to drown out the people you're with. Drinks are well crafted and taste great. The servers are so friendly and attentive. While experience ties together so well, loved every second of it.
Hecate is an absolute gem! From the moment we made our reservation, Rose went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. Her professionalism and warm demeanor set the tone for an incredible evening. The vibe here is unmatched—intimate, stylish, and buzzing with great energy. The drinks? Next level! The bartender was on fire, crafting some of the best cocktails we’ve ever had. Every sip was a masterpiece, and it’s clear they take pride in their craft. If you’re looking for a spot with top-notch service, amazing drinks, and a fantastic atmosphere, Hecate is the place to be. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!
Don't listen to the 1-Star reviews, as most are upset about it being a first-come-first-serve establishment. Get there around 30 minutes before open (it's worth it. I promise) The service is incredible. Our server, Sophie was easily an A+ server. We had an allergy in our party and she made sure to figure out which items were safe for the person with the allergy. She also is incredible knowledgeable about the items on the menu and explains the "lore" behind the items. Most importantly, the drinks are incredible. Sure, they are pricey. But it's an experience to enjoy something very unconventional. This is not a place to get a margarita or a gin & tonic. You come here to have your mind blown with the unmatched creativity and backstory behind the drinks. I will be back and I can't wait. Just remember, get there early. You'll be rewarded.
First time here. Show up early to make it in. Will so come back again next time around. The bartender was cool & in my opinion, makes the best drinks in Boston.
Tucked beneath Krasi in Boston’s Back Bay, Hecate is more than just a bar—it’s a journey. Inspired by the Greek goddess of magic and crossroads, this speakeasy offers a spellbinding escape from the ordinary, weaving together ambiance, craftsmanship, and storytelling in a way few places can replicate. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported to a world that feels European yet distinctly unique. The space is intimate, with dim lighting, plush textures, and a chic blend of vintage and contemporary design. The subtle beats of house music set the tone for a night of discovery, while the bartenders, poised like performers, work their magic behind the bar. Lou Charbonneau’s cocktail menu is where the enchantment truly begins. Each drink is a masterpiece, reflecting inspiration drawn from far-flung spice markets, culinary delights, and worldly travels. The drinks at Hecate don’t just quench thirst—they tell a story. One sip might evoke the warmth of a Moroccan souk, while another might transport you to a bustling European café. This balance of old-world charm and modern creativity results in cocktails that are simultaneously familiar and delightfully unexpected. Hecate’s charm lies not in a clandestine entrance but in the curated experience within. Every detail, from the glassware to the garnish, is a deliberate choice meant to captivate. It’s no wonder Hecate has earned global acclaim, listed among the “World 50 Best Discovery Bars” and the “Top 500 Bars.” If you’re seeking more than just a drink—if you’re craving a story, an adventure, a memory—Hecate is your destination. Here, time slows, curiosity flourishes, and every sip feels like a revelation. It’s not just one of Boston’s coolest speakeasies; it’s one of the coolest anywhere.
This place is literally in a back alley. We only found after asking a bunch of girls we met in the alley. They put in a lot of effort into the ambiance - you feel like you are in a cave with dim lights and Hecate statues and weird looking trinkets. Not sure if their drinks menu keeps changing but I went there in September and got this drink called “Katabasis” was literally served in a skull shaped glass. You will need your “spirit guide” to help you out with the drinks (nothing on the drinks menu made any sense to me anyway). When it gets crowded it does get a little claustrophobic I will also recommend you get a reservation be for you show up.
Really cool experience, very secretive location and interesting drinks. The staff was very nice, we had a great time. The only thing is the prices are a bit high, every alcoholic drink was $22 which is Ok but I wanted a bit more of a cool feature with my drink for $22. It was really fun, I might go back but the prices were what hurt the most. Would definitely return for that speakeasy experience though.
